Pennington b.1836 who was son of Andrew Pennington b.1809 - Abel married
Emily Blevins (his first wife) who was his first cousin on his mother side
of the family (her father was Daniel Blevins, brother to Abel's mother
Hester Ann Blevins). Well, Emily's mother was Lucy Ann Dickson and father
was Daniel Blevins. Lucy Ann was the daughter of Johannah Pennington
b.3/24/1779 who m. Douglas Dickson. Johannah was the daughter of Micajah

unproven as there were at least four persons by same name in the

impossible to think that where there are now magnificent fields of corn
and thrifty farms, less than half a century ago was a wilderness
inhabited by wild animals and savages. Still stranger is it to think
that we have in our midst one of those old settlers who spent his best
energies in subduing the wilderness and bringing it to the state of

Notes for TEMPERANCE LOUISE BRADSHAW FITZGERALD: Notes from Shirley
Ward.
The following a a reprint of a letter received by this compiler in
1957 from Ola Bowers in Ellington, MO.
September 4, 1957
Dear Shirley,
Grandmother Dickson was borned in North Carolina about 1832. Her name
was Temperance Louise Bradshaw, her mother was French, father Irish. The
Bradshaws moved from North Carolina to Tennessee. When she was 14 year s
old they crossed the Cumberland Mountains through the Cumberland Gap i n
a wagon, settled in Tennessee, where she was married to Alfred
Fitzgerald about 1851. There were four children: Elizabeth, Frank,
George and Annie. Alfred moved from Tennessee to Missouri and came by
floating down t he Ohio River to Cairo in a houseboat stopping at river
towns to sell merchandise they carried on the boat. They sold the boat
at Memphis, Tennessee, and came by wagon to Howell County, MO. There
Alfred died of typhoid or summer fever it was called at the time. He
died in June and Annie w as borned in August of that Year, 1860.
Grandmother sold her possessions in Howell County and started back to
he r people in Tennessee. She hired a man to take her to Ironton, Mo.
There she expected to get on a train, but the War between the States was
on and the man got scared of Price's Army, which was near Ironton and
put Grandmother out in a log cabin at Barnesville, now Ellington, and
went back to Howell County.
Grandfather Dickson, whose wife had died a few weeks before and had
left him with four children went after her and they were married.
Tennessee Louisa, your mother sic(grandmother) was the first of their
children . Sherman and a twin sister were second, the twin girl died.
Temperance Laura was next and then a little girl Grandpa named Ulysses
S. Grant Dickson. She died at four years. And then Eugenia was the last
child.
Uncle Sherman Dickson is alive yet. He lives in Elma, Washington; and
Aunt Genie Evans is still living in St. Louis, Mo. All the rest are dead
. All of them have children except Aunt Genie, who has about lost her
memory. Any other question you would like to ask I will answer if I can
. I hope this will help to grow your family tree.
Sincerely,
Ola Bowers

of Co. B, T hird Missouri Cavalry; returned to his farm in Reynolds Co.
after the war ; served in the Thirty-sixth General Assembly and
re-elected in 1892 to t he Thirty-seventh; farmer. Married."
From the Ellington Press, Ellington, Reynolds County, Missouri, July
20 , 1916, page 3 column 3:
"William Douglas Dickson was born in Whitley County, KY, Dec. 13,
1837, w as the son of William Douglas and Francis Dickson. When he was
two year s old his parents moved to Scott Co Mo, and later moved to
Reynolds Co. , MO and settled here permanently.
On Oct. 25, 1860 he was married to Sarah Jane Rayfield also of the
count y and they established their home on Doe Run Valley. With his own
hand s he cleared the forest, built his little house and for fifty-six
years h ave made it their home. To this happy union were born 14
children, 12 o f whom reached manhood and womanhood. Eleven living and
all were aroun d his bedside during his last days.
Early in life he gave his heart to God, was converted at the Old Camp
Gro und on Logan Creek under the preaching of Brother Ben McNiel. He
joine d the Methodist Church at once, being baptized by Brother Jim
Copeland, t he pastor then in charge. For fifty-eight years he was one
of the most f aithful members of the church and only left the Church
Militant for the C hurch Triumphant Thursday morning, July 6, 1916, at
three o'clock at th e ripe age of 79 years, 6 months and 23 days.
His interest in his church and family occupied the first place in his
hea rt and life and he gave to these an unstinted sacrifice. His county
ha s been much enriched by the investment he made of his life.
He served two terms in the Missouri Legislature, the 35th and 36th
Genera l Assembly. He was quiet and unassuming, and when he spoke, it
was to th e point.
In the second year of the Civil War he enlisted in Col. Green's
Company B , 3rd MO Cavalry and remained until the close of the war.
In October, 1910, he and his faithful wife were given the privilege,
fe w men enjoy, that of gathering to their home their family to
celebrate th e Golden Anniversary of their wedding, and not one of us
who were there c an ever forget it. Not a face was missing in that
gathering. One expres sion came from his heart that day that will linger
with us. "The happies t days of our lives were when you were all with
us." Today he is the fou rth of that circle on the Other Side.
He spent his life well and in his going he had no regrets. For nearly
a m onth he was confined to his bed and endured much suffering but not
one wo rd of complaint did he ever utter.
To all those who went to his bedside, who had not taken Christ as
their S aviour, he would talk to them of their souls and ask them to
meet him i n Heaven.
He tried to comfort his family, telling them they ought to rejoice
for hi m. Death had no sting for him for he had "Put his house in
order." He l eaves behind a lively Christian wife, eleven children, 26
grandchildren a nd three great grandchildren..............By one who was
present.
